A hat-trick of medals for young champion swimmer

Champion swimmer, Alex Cohoon (19) from Fairford in Gloucestershire, is continuing with his successful swimming career as well as being a full time student at Loughborough University. Studying a three year BSc (Hons) degree in Sport and Exercise Therapy, Alex has already made a name for himself as ‘the one to watch’.

Recently (February 18-20), Alex took part in the 2022 BUCS (British Universities and College Sports) Nationals, which saw athletes compete in the 50m Olympic-sized pool, as over 5,000 students from all over the UK came to take part in the Speedo and BUCS Swimming Series at Ponds Forge ISC in Sheffield.

Alex was thrilled to win two Gold medals and one Silver – Gold in the 100m Freestyle event, Gold in the 100m 4×4 Relay event, and Silver in the 50m Freestyle – narrowly missing out on Gold by just 1/100th of a second.

The next big championship for Alex is the Edinburgh International Swim Meet at the Royal Commonwealth Pool, Edinburgh from March 11-13. This annual event attracts a top-class field including British swimming’s elite athletes and leading athletes from Europe.

Since starting his university studies at Loughborough University in September 2021, Alex has achieved a huge amount of success. His first competition for Loughborough Uni was the Masters National Championships at Sheffield in October 2021 when he won gold medals in all five of his relay races, broke three Masters’ records and also won gold medals for all his individual swims.

Carrying on from his success at the Masters, Alex’s next big competition was the BUCS (British Universities and College Sports) event in November – once again in Sheffield – where Alex swam in relays and individual races representing Loughborough University.

Alex, who regularly trains for up to 16 hours in the pool and seven hours in the gym every week, is working towards his dream of representing his country at the 2024 Paris Olympics and his coaches are spurring him on to get good qualifying times as an individual and as part of the relay team for the Commonwealth Games in August 2022 in Birmingham and the Olympic trials in London in 2022.

Alex said: “Obviously I am thrilled with my performance last weekend and this success has made me even more determined to work hard to get good qualifying times for the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham next August. Ultimately, my dream is to be top of my game and represent my country in the Olympics.”
