Let's work together

Primary School Star Speakers

One of the heats of a new Oracy competition organised by the Gloucestershire Primary Heads Association was recently hosted by Fairford C of E Primary School.

Staff and pupils from the Fairford School welcomed other Gloucestershire primary schools from Down Ampney, Kemble, Powells, Sapperton, Siddington, South Cerney and Southrop to compete in the ‘Look Who’s Talking’ competition on Friday March 10.

Eight pupils from KS1, Lower KS2 and Upper KS2 were required to talk for two minutes about absolutely anything that they are interested in or have done. A Star Speaker from each group was then chosen by outside judges: Chiquita Henson (CEO of the Corinium Education Trust) and me (former Governor of Fairford Primary School).

The three overall winners were Matthew Hughes, the Key Stage 1 winner from Fairford Primary School speaking about the White Tailed Eagle and Highland Cattle. Lexi Neil from Kemble Primary was the winning speaker in Lower Key Stage 2 speaking about the Giant Panda, and Alan Basheer from Down Ampney School was the Upper Key Stage 2 winner speaking about Online Gaming.

These three pupils will now go on to the finals of the ‘Look Who’s Talking’ competition representing the South Cotswolds against 20 other schools at the Guildhall in Gloucester on May 26.

Mrs Julie Fellows, Headteacher at Fairford C of E Primary School said: “By teaching our children to become more effective speakers and listeners, we are helping to give them the tools they need to better understand themselves, each other and the world around them.”
